How to Identify a Cult
Ever wonder how good people get pulled into bad systems? Shay breaks down what makes a modern group or organization controlling or abusive -- from lovebombing and loyalty tests to the use of legal contracts and punishments. Using Dr. Steven Hassan's BITE Model and real-life examples, Shay shows how these same patterns show up not just in religion, but in politics, marketing, and even relationships -- and how we can spot them before they take hold.
Shay Vetter is an author and advocate for equality and integrity. After years in evangelical missionary and seminary work, Shay witnessed firsthand how systems of faith can both inspire and harm. Their journey of deconstruction led them to a UU fellowship, where they found belonging and purpose. They’re also the award-winning author of the Eclipse Arts series and a visible presence in Myrtle Beach’s protest and civic action circles.
